![]() Sophisticated and calming, I could think of no candle that would be better to burn beside a nice, warm bath. The smokey notes of this candle really added a whole new layer to this classic fragrance and it was a nice change. I’ve smelled many lavender chamomile scents over the years but never one that was this complex. Lavender & Chamomile (Lena) – I found this scent to be so interesting. It’s a fresh scent of lily, jasmine, and tuberose that never feels heavy and is balanced with some nice vanilla notes. White Petals (Claudette) – Wow! This is a floral fragrance that I can’t get enough of. The fragrance had its own uniqueness to it that set itself apart from other plain vanilla candles out there, and like many of the fragrances we have seen from Bijou, it was complex with notes that balanced and complemented each other very well. ![]() It was nice and sweet and the description of ‘mini cupcakes’ on the website is pretty much spot on with what I picked up on in this scent. While it would be perfect for any time of the year it makes an especially good scent for this time of year. ![]() Size: 10.5 oz full size and 3 oz travel tin candlesīurn Time: 70 hours and 25 hours according to the official websiteīourbon & Vanilla (Greta) – This scent was the candle that we had in full size. I for one am digging this new look.īut on to the most important part of the candles. The trim adds contrast with a gold rim around the top and the black writing features the names of the Old Hollywood actresses that inspired them. The vessels are now made of a more modern milky white glass that glows from the candle’s flame within. Heck, and yes.The new redesign may be just as elegant, in a different way. Head on over to Bijou Candles’ website to check them out. It’s clear that these characters still loom large in our imaginations - and I think the reasons why matter.Īnyway, all of this is to say that, when it comes to gorgeous scented candles named for some of my favorite witchy characters, I am Here For It. But the fact of the matter is, it’s happening, and I think that alone is significant - as is the fact that Charmed, which isn’t represented in Bijou’s collection, but which still remains significant, will see a reboot in the near future, as well. Yes, I know I have complicated feelings about the Buffy reboot, too. I find it interesting, by the way, that not only did all three of these witches factor prominently in ‘90s pop culture, but also, they’ve all seen at least the glimmers of different takes arise in recent years: When Harry Potter and the Cursed Child debuted on both the stage and the page in 2016, we got to see grown-up Hermione in action Sabrina the Teenage Witch - the Melissa Joan Hart version of which was already a reimagining of a classic comic book character - is set to reemerge on Netflix as The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, a gritty, Riverdale-style reboot, in October and a reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is apparently in the works, as well. Similarly, Diptyque’s large option, a 6.5-ounce candle, retails for a whopping $65, while Bijou’s large size, a 10.5-ounce option with a 70-hour burn time, costs $29 - less, even, than Diptyque’s 2.4-ounce candle. Whereas a 2.4-ounce candle from Diptyque will set you back around $35, a three-ounce Bijou candle with a burn time of 25 hours costs $9. Here’s what I mean: Consider Diptyque, one of the leading brands of luxury candles on the market today. Made in small batches with sustainable, vegan ingredients, the company’s soy candles come in a wide number of scents ranging from the gourmand (like Greta, a bourbon and vanilla dream) to the woodsy (try Ingrid, a refreshing pine balsam scent) - they won’t break the bank, either. I’m sure the same is true for a lot of folks who were teens in the ‘90s.įounded by married couple Jocelyn and Alaina Drew in 2012, Bijou’s goal is to make luxury candles affordable for those of us who don’t live on luxury budgets. You see, we’re not talking about just any pop culture witches - we’re talking about a trio of witches who were incredibly influential to me in my youth. I am not, generally - but I might be about to become one: Bijou Candles has just released a “Candle Coven Trio” of candles inspired by famous pop culture witches, and, uh… let’s just say that I am feeling incredibly Seen right now.

As a result, infested seeds are often deposited with healthy seeds during the cleaning process. Growers often have difficulty identifying chalcid infestations, because infested seeds not only appear normal on the outside but also weigh about as much as healthy seeds. Protecting the Seed SupplyĪlthough chalcid infestations aren’t currently considered a major threat to North Carolina’s Christmas tree industry, they could eventually become a costly issue for growers, according to Matallana. “The proposed research will contribute basic and practical knowledge to improve seed quality and leverage chalcid development to control future infestations in other fir orchards in North Carolina,” Matallana said. Ross Whetten, a professor in Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources and member of NC State’s Molecular Tree Breeding Lab, to determine clone-specific infestation rates before and after pesticide treatment and to identify candidate clones with reduced susceptibility to Megastigmus specularis and other chalcids. With funding from the North Carolina Christmas Tree Association, Matallana is now working with Dr. Additionally, the team found that pesticide treatment may impact infestation rates. Previous work by Matallana and other NC State researchers suggested that there may be genetic differences in Megastigmus infestation rates among trees in clonal seed orchards, and that these differences could affect the cost of planting stock for Christmas tree growers due to downstream impacts on the viability of seeds from the same clone during long-term storage. Watch: Parasitic Wasp Larva Emerges from Christmas Tree Seed These attributes provide a considerable increase in income for Christmas tree plantation owners across the state. Trees derived from clonal seed orchards have more desirable characteristics than trees that originate from seeds collected in natural stands. ![]() The state’s Christmas tree industry is mainly supplied with seeds from natural stands and genetically-improved material from clonal seed orchards, according to Matallana. Nearly all of the state’s trees – 96 percent – are Fraser firs, mostly grown in 14 mountain counties. North Carolina produces more than 6 million Christmas trees each year, about 15 percent of the nation’s natural Christmas trees – second only to Oregon. But, because of increased interest in growing Fraser fir for Christmas trees, information about the effect of these insects on the state’s seed supply is needed. Until recently, there was little reason to be concerned about Megastigmus specularis and similar species in North Carolina, according to Matallana. Matallana said this cycle – which leaves seeds inviable for commercial planting – is repeated annually except some larvae delay emergence for an additional year or more, presumably to preserve the species in case of crop failures. Once the egg hatches, the larvae feed on the seed until they’ve matured. Females then fly to developing cones and use an elongated ovipositor (like a modified stinger) to drill into the seeds and deposit their eggs. The tiny wasp – about 3 mm long – overwinters in fir seed on the ground, with adults emerging in spring. Female Megastigmus specularis isolated from Fraser fir seeds in the Molecular Tree Biology Lab. Photo by Matt Bertone of the NC State Plant Disease and Insect Clinic. It mostly infests Fraser fir trees in the Appalachian Mountains, according to Dr. Lilian Matallana, a research associate at NC State’s Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources. Originally described in the 1930s, Megastigmus specularis is one of several thousand species of chalcid wasps. That includes parasitic wasps that eat the seeds of Christmas trees before they ever get the chance to grow. In North Carolina – which is the second-largest producer and exporter of Christmas trees – growers face changing weather patterns, diseases, and a number of other challenges that could potentially prolong the shortage. Seeds are harvested from the cones of mature Christmas trees – and because it can take several years for trees to reach maturity, the shortage is likely to continue beyond 2019. In recent years, however, some growers in major tree-producing states like North Carolina and Oregon have struggled to remain profitable amid a looming shortage.Įxperts with the National Christmas Tree Association and NC State Cooperative Extension say the shortage is partly a result of the 2008 recession when decreased demand led growers to plant fewer seeds. Whether it’s bought at a retail lot or farm, a live Christmas tree is an integral part of the holiday season for millions of Americans. #> $ IC_NAME : chr "NATIONAL INSTITUTE ON DRUG ABUSE" "NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF GENERAL MEDICAL SCIENCES" "NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF ALLERGY AND INFECTIOUS DISEASES" "NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF ALLERGY AND INFECTIOUS DISEASES". #> $ FUNDING_MECHANISM : chr "Research Centers" "Research Projects" "Research Projects" "Other Research Related". #> $ ED_INST_TYPE : chr "" "" "SCHOOLS OF MEDICINE" "SCHOOLS OF MEDICINE". #> $ ADMINISTERING_IC : chr "DA" "GM" "AI" "AI". #> $ ABSTRACT_TEXT : chr "Methamphetamine (MA) is remarkably addictive and relapse to excessive use is highly probable and poses serious "| _truncated_ " Project Summary Risk bimarkers have become increasingly important in clinical decision making, guiding patient"| _truncated_ " DESCRIPTION (provided by applicant): Despite enormous efforts, no effective vaccine is currently available "| _truncated_ " DESCRIPTION (provided by applicant): This four-year K01 award application is to provide intensive multi-dis"| _truncated_. Examples include an R-squared for probabilistic topic models ( working paper here), probabilistic coherence (a measure of topic quality), and a topic labeling function based on most-probable bigrams. In addition, textmineR has utility functions for topic models. With LSA, for example, there is a third object representing the singular values in the decomposition. For non-probabilistic models (e.g. LSA) these distributions are, obviously, not probabilities. In the case of probabilistic models, these are categorical probability distributions. The second, phi ( \(\Phi\)), has rows representing a distribution of words over topics. The first, “theta” ( \(\Theta\)), has rows representing a distribution of topics over documents. TextmineR’s consistent representation of topic models boils down to two matrices. (And textmineR takes advantage of the RSpectra package for LSA’s single-value decomposition.) Plans exist to implement LDA natively with Rcpp sometime in 2018. (Examples with LDA and LSA follow below.) As of this writing, textmineR’s LDA and CTM functions are wrappers for other packages to facilitate a consistent workflow. You can fit Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), Correlated Topic Models (CTM), and Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) from within textmineR. Methods of Sequence Valueĭevelopers use methods related to the sequence object created in the database, such as fetching the name of the sequence object and retrieving the current maximum value of that sequence object. ![]() Hence, we can see that the student_id column works as the auto-incremented field now. Now, let us check our educba table records and see whether values are inserted for the student_id column and auto-incremented. ![]() Now, let us insert a record specifying the DEFAULT value for our student_id column.Ĭode: INSERT INTO educba(student_id,name) VALUES(DEFAULT,'Piyush') Saying that 1 row is inserted successfully. When you insert the records in the table with auto-incremented valued columns, you can either skip inserting those column values or specify the DEFAULT keyword for those columns in your INSERT query statement. To verify our table creation, let us fire the \dt command.Īs it can be seen that the table named educba is created successfully. To do so, you will externally need to define the column as the PRIMARY KEY.Ĭode: CREATE TABLE educba(student_id SERIAL PRIMARY KEY ,name VARCHAR(100) NOT NULL) Declaring a column of type SERIAL does not automatically create an index on that column or consider it as its primary key. Let us now take an example of how serial pseudo-type helps us achieve auto-incrementation. The storage space and range of all the three pseudo-types of the serial are as follows: Pseudo-type name This is similar to short int, int, and long int. Which differ in their storage space and range limits. In PostgreSQL, we can create a SERIAL pseudo-type that can belong to either of the following three types. For this purpose, the owner of the created sequence educba_student_id_seq is set to the student_id column of the educba table.Deleting the student_id column should also lead to deleting the SEQUENCE object associated with it.As a sequence always generates a non-null integer value, the column student_id will be assigned with the NOT NULL constraint. It assigns the default value of the “student_id” column to the next value of that sequence. When a table with a SERIAL column called “student_id” is created in PostgreSQL, the system automatically generates a new SEQUENCE object for that column.PostgreSQL executes the above-mentioned internal queries when declaring any column of type SERIAL in a table. Some of them are as follows: CREATE SEQUENCE educba_student_id_seq CREATE TABLE educba (student_id integer NOT NULL DEFAULT nextval('educba_student_id_seq'), name VARCHAR(100)) ALTER SEQUENCE educba_student_id_seq OWNED BY educba.student_id Internally, PostgreSQL executes a series of commands. When we declare the column named “student_id” of type SERIAL in the table creation query for the “educba” table in the following way.Ĭode: CREATE TABLE educba(student_id SERIAL,name VARCHAR(100)) That further helps us achieve the auto-incrementation of the values of certain columns declared as SERIAL type. While creating a table in PostgreSQL, if we declare any column of the type SERIAL, internally, the SERIAL pseudo-type also creates a new SEQUENCE object for that column and table default values. We can define the minimum and maximum value, incremental step value, name, and owner of the SEQUENCE and cache space, which needs to be pre-allocated space in the memory of the sequenced list.Developers can create a sequence using the ‘CREATE SEQUENCE’ statement.SEQUENCE is completely a schema-bound object defined by the user according to their special requirements.First, you need to understand how the SEQUENCE object works.Hadoop, Data Science, Statistics & others SEQUENCE Database Object ![]() Remember that GPUs aren’t used on most VDI servers.
